Service Opportunities – March 5

The Y’s Young Moms Program at the Kiwanis Young Family Centre offers safe, affordable and supported housing opportunities for single mothers aged 16-29 with children up to the age of five. With fulltime staff providing a variety of programs for the residents and community, Y-Young Moms Program creates the foundation upon which young single mothers facing many personal challenges can build a stable new beginning for themselves and their little ones.

They have received a grant to do some major upgrades and need help! The transformation of Kiwanis Young Family Centre will include:

  • Design and construction of two brand-new two-bedroom basement suites. This will increase Young Moms’ occupancy by 25%.
  • Refurbish and refresh of the eight existing suites.
  • Design and build a better family free store.
  • Design and construct a nature playground.
  • Redesigned front landscape to maximize parking for staff and residents.
  • Repair and upgrade a laundry list of worn and weathered details around the building.

They are looking for volunteers from May 2 to June 26. If you’re interested in volunteering, please inquire online.

The Canucks Autism Network provides year-round sports and recreation programs for individuals with autism. Volunteers work in a fun and fast-paced sports and recreation environment offering high levels of support to participants (most programs offer 1-to-1 support). Volunteers do not need any prior experience to be part of the programs – a training session as well as hands-on training during the program will be provided. Please note that volunteers must be 16 years and older.

Programs take place on weekday evenings and weekends and last for one to three hours, depending on the selected program. Volunteers would be asked to support a program once per week for one season. Alternatively, volunteers can join our substitute lists to step in and lend a hand when needed!

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website or email with any questions.

A group of students from the Junior School will be here on campus on Thursday, March 12, for a small day camp. They are looking for students from the Senior School who want to volunteer to hang out and have fun with them! Please note that you should only offer to volunteer when you have spare periods.

Students are between 5 and 10 years old and will be here between 10 am and 3 pm. Do you have a skill you want to share? Do you want to help with crafts? Maybe do some buddy reading? Do an impromptu jam session? Set up a board game cafe? The options are endless! You can come out for a small part of the day – whatever works for you!

If you are interested please email Ms. Shihadeh at She can chat  with you to find something that works.
