Service Opportunities – November 20

Every year, SMUS helps out with the take-down for the Jingle Mingle, which is a fundraiser for the BC Cancer Foundation. This event is on Thursday, November 28, and our role is to help them put away the decorations after the event. We will leave school at 8 pm and will return around 10:20 p.m. This is a SMUS sponsored event and we provide a chaperone and transportation.

Please fill out this quick form to sign up. It is a school night, so please double check that you are available, and don’t have tests or anything the next day.

The 11th annual Gingerbread Showcase, Habitat for Humanity Victoria’s annual fundraiser, is on now and they need your help hosting the many visitors that come out to view and vote for their favourite creation. The Parkside Hotel is once again hosting the event in their beautiful atrium.

Local professional and home chefs have built imaginative gingerbread creations, all in support of Habitat Victoria. The show runs daily from 9 am to 9 pm until Sunday, January 5. Shifts are only three hours long with up to two ambassadors per shift. Sign up for as many and you like – preferably with a friend!

You can sign up for shifts online or get more information by emailing [email protected].

The annual Gift Wrap is one of the biggest fundraising events for the Mustard Seed. During the month of December, more than 100 volunteers participate at gift wrapping stations located in shopping malls. Gifts are wrapped in exchange for a donation to The Mustard Seed.

Have fun spreading holiday cheer while wrapping gifts. Every booth is open from December 1 to 24. Shifts are available in the morning, afternoon and evening on weekdays and weekends. Locations include Mayfair Shopping Centre, Hillside Shopping Centre or Tillicum Shopping Centre.

Sign up on The Mustard Seed website. If you have any questions, please contact Julia at [email protected]!

Volunteers are needed for downtown Victoria’s first outdoor holiday light display!

As a Lights of Wonder Volunteer, you may be asked to:
– Greet visitors and provide them with information about the event
– Use a clicker to help track the number of visitors
– Help with set-up and close-down of the event (info booth, help with signage, etc.)
– Maintain cleanliness of the event site
– Receive and keep count of donations received at the “Giving Booth”
– Promptly communicate with event staff.

Training will take place on Wednesday, December 11 at a volunteer orientation from 6 to 8 pm. Attending the orientation is mandatory, but if you can’t attend the one scheduled they will arrange a make-up orientation opportunity. Please keep in mind that this is an outdoor event in Centennial Square, so the weather may be cold.

Shifts are a maximum of four hours and will take place starting December 14, from 3:30 to 9:30 pm (Sunday through Wednesday); and 3:30 to 10:30 pm (Thursday through Saturday).

The Middle School has a unique opportunity. They are looking for a “homework buddy” for a grade 6 girl to help her with homework after school, visit and spend time chatting. They are looking for a Chinese-Canadian female volunteer.

If you are keen to meet a new friend, please email [email protected]. The timing is flexible, usually after school here on campus.

Come out on Wednesday, November 27 to volunteer to bake cookies right here on campus. We have eight spots to fill and you don’t even need any experience! We will bake from 3:45 to 4:45 pm and donate our treats.

Email Ms. Parker at [email protected] to sign up.
