Heritage Acres Family Event hosted by VIME (Vancouver Island Model Engineer Society) is presenting a Family Friendly Halloween Event, “The Pumpkin Express”. Event dates are October 19, 20, and 21, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This event relies completely on volunteers from start to finish. They are looking for mature students that are interested in helping with the preparation for this event (building scarecrows, decorating the forest areas the train runs through, etc.) as well as volunteering during the event with supervision of craft tables, train track crossings, pumpkin carvings, haunted story walks, a scavenger hunt in the grave yard, and face painting.

The first opportunity to volunteer is happening soon! There is a scarecrow-building work party Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Historical Society/VIME grounds on Lochside Drive.

During the event weekend (October 19, 20 and 21) they are looking to schedule volunteers into time slots with different activities.

If you are interested please contact Diana at Please make the subject line “Pumpkin Express Volunteer”.

The Cridge Village Seniors’ Centre is running another long-term project this year: Cyber Seniors! This is a program that matches youth with seniors to explore technology (Instagram, FaceTime, email, YouTube, iPads, surfing the web, etc). Watch this trailer about the program (it is really good!).

Here is what they learned from the last session: Beyond the value in mentoring for the students and gaining skills for the seniors over the past school year, students and seniors benefited from an hour of “technology guiding” and “relationship development”. Students assisted seniors with barriers to technology, helped navigate questions, interests and cyber security, explaining their natural knowledge of the wired world. In turn students gained experience developing a relationship with a person often seven or eight decades older than themselves and a new perspective on what someone in their 80s or 90s is interested in and can do, and the challenges they may face!

Orientation on Tuesday, October 2 from 3:45 to 5 p.m.
Volunteering on Tuesdays, 3:45–4:45 p.m. from Oct. 9 – Dec. 18 (11 Sessions)
