Service Opportunities – May 3

A group of SMUS Grade 8s volunteered last week at the Compassionate Resource Warehouse.

The Oak Bay Half Marathon is coming up on Sunday, May 27. We need a team of volunteers to help out at one of the water/energy gel stations. You will be giving much needed refreshment to the runners, cheering them on and motivating them around the half-way mark. It will be from about 8 am on. Chaperone and transportation provided!

Please sign up on-line.

Ironman Victoria is looking for volunteer Lifeguards and Swim Marshals on race Day, Sunday June 3.

Swim Lifeguards **MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE**

A current lifeguard and CPR certification is required. Lifeguards will be stationed on powerboats or rescue/paddle boards on the swim course. You will be responsible for recognizing distressed athletes, recovering them from the water, and transporting them to a powerboat for removal from the water. Lifeguards also provide the first line of medical care for injured or ill athletes. Most importantly, you will have the lead responsibility for detecting swimmers in distress, making the initial contact, and, if needed, initiating a rescue.

Swim Marshals – Canoe/Kayak/SUP

Are you a kayaker, canoeist or stand-up paddle boarder? You will be positioned around the swim course, and help guide straying swimmers back onto the course. As an ‘on water’ swim course marshal you are often the first point of contact for swimmers who are seeking assistance. You may provide a flotation device so that swimmers may momentarily catch their breath. You will also communicate with the water safety team if you see a swimmer in distress. You must be able to provide your own boat, paddle, whistle, and PFD.

There are lots of other jobs in the three days leading up to the Ironman race, from site setup to bike check-in, to bike course pointer or support, parking and more.
