Service Opportunities – March 8

Saanich Recreation is looking for an Amazing Race Camp Assistant and an Eco Camp Assistant. You must be 16 or older to volunteer.

The Amazing Race Camp will introduce kids to many water sports, stroke improvement and water survival lessons and includes a fantastic out trip each week. It will also include land-based sports, crafts and games. They are looking for volunteers to commit to a whole week. Your hours will be 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday, March 19 to Friday, March 23.

The Eco Camp combines outdoor adventure and a variety of sports. Other activities may include hiking, compass and map reading, shelter building and much more. They are looking for a volunteer to commit to the whole camp. Your hours will be 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from Monday, March 26 to Thursday, March 29.

If you love working with kids and love the water, this is a perfect volunteer experience. You must be very comfortable supervising kids in the water. To apply, call Dan at 250-475-7106 or email [email protected].


On Saturday, April 28 the Junior School Parents Auxiliary is holding a “Name That Tune” event. They need two volunteers to help out from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Junior School to help re-fill snack bowls, help keep things tidy and help with take down after the event.

The Garry Oak Meadow Preservation Society (GOMPS) is looking for a Tree Nursery Volunteer. Tasks include weeding, repotting Garry oak seedlings and planting acorns. You will gain horticultural experience while supporting Garry oak restoration and conservation efforts.

The hours vary, they meet every second week for work parties (1-3 hrs) on Saturday OR Sunday afternoons beginning in March through November. To apply, please contact Judith at [email protected] or 250-391-9480.


The Victoria Health Co-operative is seeking a Social Media Coach. They need someone to patiently coach the Chair and other Board members in the use of Facebook and Twitter. They will need several 2-3 hours sessions during first month to be followed by occasional 1-2 hour sessions.

They also need a volunteer to phone members to remind them about upcoming events and check that they have the correct contact information. A phone script is provided. There will be approximately two sessions each month of 1-2 hours.

The Mustard Seed has volunteer positions available throughout the entire organization, but currently the biggest need is saving food at the Food Rescue Distribution Centre in Esquimalt. These shifts are from 9 a.m. to noon with shifts available Monday through Saturday.

This position handles cleaning and gleaning of produce and food brought in from around Victoria. Through this work thousands of pounds of good, fresh produce stays out of the landfills each week, providing food for thousands of local families and individuals.

The Selkirk Waterfront Festival is on Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This fun-filled multicultural family event offers something for everyone. Enjoy exciting activities in the Family FUN Zone, world cuisine in the international food court, and unique arts and crafts in the colourful street market. There will also be live music and dancing.
