Service Opportunities – September 21

The Story Studio Writing Society is always looking for reliable, passionate volunteers to help them help kids. They are seeking volunteers for the Fall 2017/Spring 2018 school year.

Story Studio is a non-profit that offers innovative writing-based activities to build confidence, encourage creativity and improve communication skills in youth. The programs include a variety of creative writing workshops, as well as publications and events that celebrate and promote the work of young writers. They have two opportunities:

– Volunteer Typists can commit as often as they like. They are required to pick up workbooks, type stories and return them. This is a fun and often challenging job, as students’ writing can be tricky – decoding it takes a special eye.

– Volunteer Editors receive typed files and edit typos, spelling, grammar and format stories into paragraphs. Editors should have strong grammar skills and a careful eye for language.

Do you enjoy baking? Are you are willing to bring a full cookie tin to the Swan Lake Nature House a couple of times a month? Your cookies will be much appreciated by their volunteers. They have Outdoor Restoration Teams and Office Volunteers coming in on a daily basis. Please note that several Cookie Makers are needed because the volunteers LOVE cookies! (And it’s OK to bake other treats instead of cookies.)

You can choose when to drop off the cookies because the Swan Lake Nature House is open every day. They will happily accept your cookies as often as you choose to make them! Please tape a list of ingredients and your name to the cookie tin. Questions? Call the Swan Lake-Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary at 250-479-0211.

Artemis Place Secondary School needs help setting up their on-site clothing and accessory Boutique. They need 2-3 people who can help to organize, tidy and sort clothes, as well as dress up a mannequin to highlight certain outfits. They need someone for about one hour a week after school on Tuesday or Thursday, or on Friday afternoons between 1 and 3 p.m. (if you have a spare!).
