Athletic Awards 2017

by Lindsay Brooke, Athletic Director

2016-17 has been one of the finest ever years in SMUS sporting history. Pride of place goes to the B.C. AA champion Senior boys soccer and Senior boys rugby teams. A small step behind were tennis and Senior boys basketball teams, with both missing out on provincial banners by the slimmest of margins.

In addition, five teams won Island titles, while, of the 13 sports offering provincial championships, SMUS qualified for 11. In addition, school squash players and rowers left their mark on the national and international stage with some great finishes.

Last week’s Senior School Athletics Banquet was just another reminder of the huge role sport plays at SMUS. Indeed, participation, enjoyment, performance and sportsmanship remain of vital importance, as reflected in the mottos of St. Michael’s (“Nothing is great unless it is good”) and University School (“A healthy mind in a healthy body”). To these, I would add a few final words: “To play is good, to win is better, but to love the game is the best.”

Congratulations to all athletes and coaches on an exceptional season.
