Feeding Our Future started two summers ago in Victoria. Sodexo partners with SMUS and for six weeks prepars bag lunches for about 150 kids each day. Many children receive subsidized lunches throughout the school year, but not during the summer months. This program ensures they get a healthy lunch even in the summer.
This Sodexo initiative can only work through a partnership with the school. It is the only way they can provide enough labour for it to succeed. The Sodexo Foundation and sponsorship pays for the food and supplies – they just need the willing hands! They need volunteers for a few hours a day to help put together bag lunches for these kids.
Production times will be in the Brown Hall kitchen Monday through Thursday from 1-3 p.m., and Sunday from 6-8 p.m. from July 3 until August 18. No previous experience is necessary.
There may also be opportunities for delivery drivers to take the lunches to community centers in the morning from Monday to Friday.
The James Bay Community Centre is looking for help with their Community Picnic and Silent Auction. It is on Wednesday, June 14 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
There will be face painting, games, a bouncy castle, food and music! Please call Kaitlan at 250-389-1470 for more information.
Volunteers are needed for the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre Triathlon of Compassion on Sunday, June 25. This is a big fundraiser for them, and they need help with a variety of jobs.
Please e-mail Sharde at [email protected] for more information.
The last Hot Dog Wednesday of the year is June 14. Working with the Extreme Outreach Society, we set up a cart in Blanshard Court to serve hot dogs and juice to children and community members, and play all sorts of games with them like skipping, sidewalk chalk, soccer, tag and hide and seek.
It is a great chance to connect with some amazing kids, serve some hot dogs and brush up on your BBQ skills.
On June 14 we leave at 2:55 p.m. Transportation and a chaperone are provided. Please email Ms. Parker to let her know if you would like to come along!
