Service Opportunities – May 5

SMUS's Volunteer Club helped at the TC 10K Run last weekend.

BBQHot Dog Wednesday is back!

What is Hot Dog Wednesday, you ask? Working with the Extreme Outreach Society, we set up a cart in Blanshard Court to serve hot dogs and juice to children and community members, and play all sorts of games with them like skipping, sidewalk chalk, soccer, tag and hide and seek. It is a great chance to connect with some amazing kids, serve some hot dogs and brush up on your BBQ skills.

We are going next week, May 10. We leave at 2:55 p.m. so you need permission to miss part of your 5th period class. Transportation and a chaperone are provided. Please email Ms. Parker to let her know if you would like to come along!

OB 1/2 MarathonThe Oak Bay Half Marathon is coming up quickly and they still need volunteers. They are looking for road marshals for race day, Sunday May 28.

Please note, this is a different opportunity than the one being offered by the Volunteer Club. This one is independent and you sign up, get there and contact them on your own.

VHGAIt takes a large team of enthusiastic volunteers to put on the Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival and they need you! The games take place from May 20-22. Volunteering for the Games is a great way to experience Scottish and Celtic culture, music, arts and athletics. Volunteering at the Games comes with some great perks:

– Free lunch and/or snack;
– Free (and highly desirable!) volunteer T-shirt;
– Opportunity to meet new people;
– Play a vital role in supporting an amazing event that has been taking place for over 150 years.

On the volunteer application site you can choose one or more time slots from a variety of roles in the following categories (called “signups”):

– General roles
– Gates, Merchandise Sales
– Children’s Area (police checks required)
– Highland Dance Competition area (competition experience preferred).

bcchildrenshospitallogoThe Vancouver Island Family Fun Day in Support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation is being held on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Fun Day is an afternoon of fun for the whole family, to celebrate the vibrant community of supporters on our island. The event is free for everyone but some activities, including a barbecue, are by donation. All funds will support outreach programs that serve young patients right here on Vancouver Island.

They need volunteers to help with the photo booth, activity stations, games, bouncy castles and barbecue. The event will be held at the Delta Ocean Pointe Patio and Songhees Point.

Please contact if you are interested in volunteering.

braefootThe Braefoot Community Association is hosting their annual Family Fun Night on Tuesday, May 16. They need volunteers at the check-in desks, people to supervise the bouncy castle and inflatables, helpers at the craft table, runners, general helpers and someone to help out with the mascots.
