SMUS Announces Mr. Mark Turner as New Head of School

Mark Turner

We are very pleased to announce that Mark Turner, a dynamic and award-winning global educator, has been appointed as the new Head of School. He succeeds outgoing Head Bob Snowden, who retires at the end of this school year.

Mark comes to SMUS with a phenomenal reputation as a transformative leader at some of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools, including Shrewsbury School, where Mark has been Head since 2010.

“We are very excited about this appointment,” says SMUS Board of Governors Chair
Blair Hagkull. “From the beginning of our search process, Mark stood out as an energetic forward-thinker who is ideally suited to lead St. Michaels University School to even higher levels of excellence and international reputation, building on Bob Snowden’s very successful 22 years.”

Mark’s excellence as an educator and administrator has been recognized repeatedly by the national school awards adjudicated by the influential UK magazine Tatler. He was named Headmaster of the Year in 2009 and was short-listed for that honour in 2005, 2007 and 2016.

Mark says he looks forward to getting to know the SMUS community and carry on the great educational work that has been done over the school’s long history.

“During the last few months [my family has] heard a great deal about the international reputation of SMUS for the strength of its academic curriculum, its commitment to holistic education, but perhaps most importantly, for the strength of the relationships that bind it together,” he said in a welcome message to the SMUS community.

Our new Head of School Designate and his wife Elizabeth will start the job of getting to know our community in August, when they will visit the School with their two adult sons, Alexander and Gideon. Mark and Elizabeth will visit a few more times during the 2017-2018 school year before they move in to Reynolds House in the summer of 2018.

Over the course of Mark’s first transitional year he will work in partnership with Senior School director Mr. Andy Rodford, who will assume the role of Acting Head of School. Andy is currently our Deputy Head of School and an experienced former head.
