Service Opportunities – December 8

brainOn Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, you can help the Victoria Brain Injury Society at the “Chuck a Puck” fundraising night at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre when the Victoria Royals play the Kelowna Rockets. You will help to sell foam pucks at the game. During the second intermission, fans are given a chance to throw their pucks on the ice at designated targets to win prizes.

The need volunteers to help from around 5 to 9:30 p.m. The exact times will be firmed up closer to the date.

bakingSMUS Winter Camp programs are looking for student volunteers to work with the baking camp during the winter holidays. You would help out from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. (or 8:45 a.m. until noon) on December 19-23. The work involves helping young children read and follow the recipes, play games with them during breaks, and help out the cooking instructor with various other tasks in the kitchen.

recycleThreshold Housing Society has been offering transitional housing for youth at risk of becoming homeless in Victoria since 1992. Since 2012, Threshold has increased its ability to house youth by 200%, and they are still growing.

Threshold is looking for volunteers to assist with their monthly Threshold Day Plastics Recycling & Bottle Drive, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month from 9-11 a.m. at St. Matthias Church (600 Richmond Ave.).

No heavy lifting or experience required. They will provide on-site training and gloves.
You can choose to work with the plastics recycling or the bottle drive section or both.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that is environmentally friendly and social, with a small monthly time commitment, this is the one for you!

extreme-outreachExtreme Outreach hosts a Christmas dinner every year. Feeding people a turkey dinner is an awesome way to create a community where people are safe and feel connected with each other. They always need volunteers to come and help with their programs, and the Christmas dinner is a fun and easy way to get involved!

This year it is on Saturday, December 17. They need volunteers for various jobs. Visit their website to fill in an application form.

giftThis year the Mustard Seed continues its traditional ‘Spirit of Giving’ Gift Wrap program. Volunteers will wrap gifts and interact with busy shoppers in four malls (Tillicum Centre, Mayfair Shopping Centre, The Bay Centre and Hillside Shopping Centre) in exchange for a financial donation or a gift for a child, as part of their ‘Give a Gift’ Program. They need over 200 volunteers for gift wrapping shifts until December 24th.

mustardThe Mustard Seed Christmas Hamper Week is from December 12-19. During this week, they dive into the spirit of giving by assisting registered community members in preparing and receiving the food they need to enjoy the holiday season they deserve. The need approximately 30 volunteers each day to greet, prepare hampers and interact with those receiving the gift of seasonal sustenance this year. This opportunity is for those aged 16 and over only.
