The Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich are hosting a volunteer information and appreciation evening on Friday, November 18 at 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the volunteer opportunities the DAO has. It is especially relevant if you are interested in science, and more particularly astronomy or astrophysics.
To reserve free tickets, please visit their Eventbrite reservation site.
Do you enjoy baking? Are you willing to bring a full cookie tin to the Swan Lake Nature House a couple of times a month? Your cookies will be appreciated by their volunteers. They have regular Outdoor Restoration Teams and Office Volunteers on a daily basis. Please note that several Cookie Makers are needed because their volunteers LOVE cookies! (And it’s OK to bake other treats instead of cookies.) Please contact Betty at 250-590-9276 or [email protected]
You can choose when to drop off the cookies, as the Swan Lake Nature House is open every day. They will happily accept your cookies as often as you choose to make them! Please tape a list of ingredients and your name to the cookie tin.
The Didi Society is looking for volunteers to help with their online communications. Raising awareness through social media, e-newsletters, publications, and blog posts is some of the most important work they can do.
They raise awareness about education programs, social justice issues, the Didi Society’s partnerships in India and Guatemala, and everything to do with gender equality, fair trade, environmental sustainability and human rights. If you are someone who is interested in any of these issues and has a knack for writing, or even just some experience in social media, this is a position for you!
Since this is a mainly online commitment, the times are flexible, but the commitment would be 1-3 hours per week. They are particularly looking for volunteers to help maintain their Twitter and Instagram presence. Email [email protected] for more information or visit www.thedidisociety.org/volunteer to apply.
Threshold Housing Society has been offering transitional housing for youth at risk of becoming homeless in Victoria since 1992. Since 2012, Threshold has increased its ability to house youth by 200%, and they are still growing.
Threshold is looking for volunteers to assist with their monthly Threshold Day Plastics Recycling & Bottle Drive, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month from 9-11 a.m. at St. Matthias Church (600 Richmond Ave.).
No heavy lifting or experience required. They will provide on-site training and gloves.
You can choose to work with the plastics recycling or the bottle drive section or both.
If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that is environmentally friendly and social, with a small monthly time commitment, this is the one for you!
If you are interested, please contact Lu at 250-383-8830 or [email protected]
Victoria Hospice is seeking solo musicians to play quiet, background-type music in their family lounge. This is not a performance or a sing-along, but quiet music to facilitate reflection and a time to pause. Perhaps you play acoustic guitar or cello? Regrettably they don’t have a piano (and sorry, no accordions or bagpipes!). The times are flexible: they need volunteers in the late afternoon at around 4 pm for one hour every week or every other week. This is a good time for patients and their families to end the afternoon with a musical interlude before dinner.
To learn more, please contact Kay at [email protected] or 250-370-8849.
