SMUS Teacher Feature: Ms. Crystal Vaughan

Crystal Vaughan

Ms. Crystal Vaughan is a born-and-raised Victorian. She completed her K-12 schooling at Victoria schools and earned her degrees – a B.A. in Psychology and an M.Ed in Counselling Psychology – from the University of Victoria. She has spent the last six years working at a Victoria-based school for children with learning disabilities. We are excited to welcome her to SMUS as our Middle School counsellor.

Let’s get to know Ms. Vaughan better:

What was your favorite subject in school?
English.

What was your first job?
I worked retail at a clothing store, and eventually moved up to assistant manager.

What do you do on a day off?
I love spending spend time with my husband and my dog, I do yoga, go to the gym, and go for a swim if it’s warm out.

Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?
There’s so many places, but South Africa is No. 1. I’d just love to go and do a safari and see the wildlife and scenery that I would never see here in Canada.

What is one goal you want to achieve in your lifetime?
I want to open up wellness centre for girls and women with a focus on them, their health and their mental health.

What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?
An Olympic gymnast. I did gymnastics for 18 years, and was a competitive gymnast for seven years.

When have you felt your biggest adrenaline rush?
Going ziplining, but I’m not a thrill-seeker.

What was the first concert you went to?
Backstreet Boys.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
Doing my master’s degree.

What is one thing you can’t live without?
My dog, Myla. And my husband, Nick, too.

What movie have you watched the most?
Dirty Dancing or Home Alone.

Have you ever won anything?
I won a lot of medals and trophies when I was a gymnast.

What was your favourite field trip as a kid in school?
The Royal BC Museum – and I really still love going there.

What are you currently reading?
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

What’s the best part of your job?
Getting to know students, providing support to them, and helping bring positivity into their life when they’re in a negative space. To be able to help them in any way I can is very rewarding.

What’s your favourite meal?
Sushi.

What do you love about living on Vancouver Island?
Everything! But the best thing is the beach.

What was your favorite childhood Halloween costume?
My mom made me a Queen of Hearts costume. It was the Queen of Hearts playing card. It was really cool!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To be able to fly.

If you didn’t have to work, what would you do?
Travel everywhere.
