Wondering how to fill your time this summer? Want to get a jump start on narrowing that list of university choices?
Why not combine a visit to a university campus with your family travels? Or make a dedicated trip to tour several schools in one area?
Campus visits are the absolute BEST way to get to know the history and culture of a particular school as well as the general vibe of the city where you might live for the next four years. And the good news is that university campuses are open all summer long to welcome prospective students and parents! Tour residence facilities, eat in the cafeteria, or meet with a professor from the program or department that interests you most. Take a look at the innovative science or engineering facilities, visit the performance hall for the fine arts program, or sit in on a summer social science lecture to get a “feel” for the school’s learning environment and academic approach.
Tours are often led by current students or recent alumni, so this is a fantastic opportunity to get the “student perspective” on what life is really like at the university. They WANT to answer your questions and share their experiences – so ask away! There may also be an opportunity to meet with staff from the admissions or financial aid offices in order to learn more about the application process, the type of student that will succeed at the university, or available scholarship and bursary opportunities. Finally, students interested in competitive athletic programs may be able to arrange an appointment to meet with a coach to learn more about the recruitment and selection process and the culture of sport at the school.
The best university is the one that is the best fit for YOU. Take the time to visit and explore university campuses and discover the community that will shape your academic, extracurricular, and social experience. It is one of the best investments you can make in your future – and a great way to spend a summer day!
