It happened again. SMUS launched its second Best School Year Ever contest in October 2014 with the tagline: “Wanted: One amazing high school student.” What we found, as was the case last year, was a lot of amazing high school students, which made our job in selecting a winner very challenging.
From Vancouver Island to the far East Coast of Canada and the United States, we were lucky to connect with some truly exceptional students from all over North America. These students are all making great impacts on their own schools in a variety of ways, and fortunately we are pleased to announce that one of them will be joining our student body in 2015-16.
• The winner of a full-year boarding scholarship to St. Michaels University School worth $50,000 is Lizzie Watson from Comox, BC.
• We were so impressed by our two runners up – Bryce Nurding, from Astoria, Oregon, and Shalese Jordan, from Lake Echo, Nova Scotia – that we increased the scholarship amount offered to each of them to $20,000.
“This is the second year we’ve run the Best School Year Ever contest, and this is the second year that deciding the winner from the three finalists has been the most difficult part of the whole contest,” says SMUS Head of School Bob Snowden. “We were so impressed by the three contest finalists, and hope they’ll all be St. Michaels students in September. We would be lucky to have all three of them here, making a positive impact on our school community.”
Lizzie says she is now really looking forward to entering Grade 11 in September, and being a part of the unique SMUS community.
“I hope to make the most of my 2015-16 school year by taking advantage of the classes offered at SMUS, getting involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, meeting new people from around the world, working hard to try and achieve my goals, supporting my friends and community, and, of course, having fun,” Lizzie says. “Just being part of a school that offers so much and encourages its students to reach their full potential makes me really excited to attend the school in the fall.”
