Have you always wanted to volunteer at the BC SPCA but still are not old enough? Do you love helping animals in any way you can? Are you an independent, hard working individual committed to improving the life and environment of shelter animals? Then this program might be for you!
The BC SPCA will be accepting applicants to their new junior volunteer program for youth between the ages of 16 and 18 to volunteer at the BC SPCA Victoria Branch once a month from February to June. Applications are due on Wednesday, January 14 at 5:00 pm. Select applicants will be invited to the orientation night and interview on Saturday January 31st from 10:00 to 11:30 am. At the orientation, you will receive more information about volunteering, the program itself, and have the opportunity to ask questions to see if this is a suitable position for you. Successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday, February 4th. Please note, only successful applicants will be contacted.
Participants will be paired with a program facilitator and a staff mentor for their volunteer work. Junior volunteers are expected to come to each of the scheduled volunteer dates for the full time. Volunteer activities during the 5 scheduled sessions will not be directly with animals, but instead, secondary activities designed to increase animal health, safety and welfare. At the last session, exemplary Junior Volunteers may be invited to sign up for training as an animal volunteer at the shelter in either the cat or small animal volunteer sections.
Each volunteer day, Junior Volunteers will get the opportunity to meet as a group with the program facilitator to discuss points of improvement, successes and concerns about volunteering. They will also get the opportunity to meet staff members in different departments of the SPCA and learn more about the running of our organization as a whole.
Junior volunteers will be able to complete 25 hours of community service and will receive a letter of recognition at the completion of the program.
