On June 4, our Grade 5 students will take the stage at the Royal Theatre to present The Gypsy Baron, an operetta by Johann Strauss II. This will be the fifth opera production from the SMUS Junior School and the cast and crew are hard at work getting the show ready for an audience.
“It’s always very exciting as the opening night gets closer and closer,” says Duncan Frater, the Junior and Middle School choir teacher, as well as the director. “A lot of work goes into each production – both from our young performers and the parents and teachers who help out – but its all worth it when the curtain rises.”
To make the three-act opera suitable for a Grade 5 cast, Duncan has condensed the story and created an adaptation that stays true to the original work. Accompanied by a live orchestra and with a complete set and costumes, the production promises to have the look and feel of a professional production.
Tickets for the June 4 & 5 shows are now on sale and available through the Royal MacPherson box office. Below, you can see a snippet from one of our previous operas, The Barber of Seville.
