#WeAreGirlRising #BringBackOurGirls Event

SMUS-Views-Becky

It is a full time of year….sports, music, hobbies, and friends all taking a lot of our attention and energy.

While we go about our days is still important to lift up our heads and see what is going on else where in the world. As educated individuals living in Canada we have a responsibility to others in the world… to learn about the complexities of situations, find out what we can do about issues that we disagree with, and stand in solidarity with others around the world.

We believe: Children everywhere deserve access to education and to be safe from harm.

Three weeks ago almost 300 schoolgirls were abducted in Chibok, Nigeria from a boarding school trying to complete their final exams by the Boko Haram group. While the world has been slow to act, as more media attention and focus from the global community has turned its attention to this issue, there is hope that these kidnapped girls may be rescued.

What can we do?

What information do we know now?

What more do we need to know to have a fuller picture?

We will be screening the documentary film, Girl Rising to begin to engage in a discussion about girls’ education globally, and specifically the events in Nigeria.
Wednesday, May 21 (7:00 – 9:00pm) in the Lecture Theatre at SMUS.
