Fourteen students from the Middle and Senior School recently attended the British Columbia and Yukon division finals for Concours d’art oratoire, a national French public-speaking contest.
Our students were selected, along with approximately 300 other students, from the initial 10,000 BC and Yukon participants who competed by school and district in February. Our students truly shone, and – despite competing, in many cases, against students enrolled in full-time immersion programs – achieved great results.
Overall, our 14 participants earned nine medals (three gold, three silver and three bronze). From what we hear, we have achieved the best SMUS results ever and we are already looking forward to implementing a few new tricks for preparing the students next year.
Thank you to all of the volunteer judges, administration, teachers and parents who helped to prepare our students. For most people, public-speaking is a daunting prospect, as it requires a great deal of hard work and practice and the confidence to overcome anxiety and perform in front of a group of strangers. Giving a speech in a second language is truly an accomplishment. The students’ mature approach to preparing for the event was so impressive.
Félicitations to all our Concours participants! Vive le français à SMUS.
