And the BSYE finalists are…

Ever since January 15, when Kalkidan Amare, David Boroto and Ann Makosinski helped SMUS launch the Best School Year Ever scholarship contest, there’s been a whole lot of activity going on behind the scenes. After the contest closed on March 31, we poured through our entries and somehow managed to narrow the field to an outstanding group of 30 semi-finalists. Those 30 went on to complete a full application and then the tough work truly began.

Last week, a panel of 14 faculty, program directors, boarding and admissions staff evaluated our semi-finalists based on three major criteria: the quality of their entry video, their potential to get involved in all aspects of school and boarding life, and finally their potential as a spokestudent for the boarding experience during their year as the BSYE winner.

The selection process was agonizing for our panel members, but as sad as we are at having to eliminate so many exceptional candidates, we are thrilled to introduce our three finalists.

  • Silke Kuhn, Abbotsford, British Columbia: an outstanding young all-rounder in academics, athletics, arts and citizenship, Silke delighted us with her poise, thoughtfulness and sense of curiosity about the world. (watch Silke’s entry video)
  • Alessandra Massa, Bastrop, Texas: known at her Austin school as “Canada” because of her crush on our country, this whip-smart cheerleader charmed us with her infectious sense of spirit and her passion to improve the lives of kids in foster care. (watch Alessandra’s entry video)
  • Santiago Mazoy, Chula Vista, California: originally from Mexico, this exuberant young California dreamer who is a triple threat in academics, athletics and the arts won us over with his abundant energy and warmth. (Watch Santiago’s entry video).

Our finalists and their families will visit us on campus next Friday, May 2, where they face a final round of interviews mixed in with fun opportunities to get to know our school and our city. We are really looking forward to welcoming them!

Then we’ll have one last difficult decision to make: who will be the recipient of a full-year scholarship and the best school year ever? Tune in on May 6 to find out.
