Soccer and Badminton off to a Great Start

Junior Girls Soccer

The team kicked off the season with a hard fought 2-1 win over GNS. SMUS opened the scoring early in the first half when Abby Fraser blasted home a rocket after receiving a slick through-ball from Mia Roberts. Roberts was then also instrumental in setting up the second goal, slipping through a similar ball to Victoria Martuscelli who then showed great skill and technique to beat the keeper. Others who impressed were Riley Clare, whose speed created many problems for the opposition defence. Sun-Eui Choi performed well in midfield, allowing SMUS to control possession. In the back line, Angela Saunders, Charlie Colby, Becca Thomson, Semele Smith, and Kaitlynn Torstensen combined neatly to thwart most of the GNS attacks.

Senior Girls Soccer

The Senior girls opened with a comfortable victory over St. Margaret’s. While it took the team some twenty minutes to get on track, goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes by Claudia Wheler and Robyn Noel confirmed a 3-0 halftime lead. The offence then kicked into high gear after the break, with Sam Biberdorf and Colleen Wong also combining for a shutout in goal.

April 7-13 promises to be a busy and challenging week, given a home league game vs GNS and then the UVic Tournament, an invitational event featuring 24 of the top teams from all around the province.

The team fared very well in its season opener vs. Oak Bay, winning convincingly by a score of 9-2. Dominant from the outset, SMUS had a legitimate chance of winning all of the eleven matches. On the boys’ side, both Kyle Tang and Chad Hou played particularly well, while Jill Ding and Airlia Hie were impressive for the girls’ squad. The contest also marked the debut of two Grade 8 students, Sara Cui and Theo Wu, who made an immediate impact playing at the senior level.

SMUS will get a truer test of its talent this coming week, playing home to Mt. Douglas and away at Claremont.
