On Sunday, February 2, the University of Victoria held the 29th edition of the grueling “Monster Erg” competition.
This year, hundreds of athletes competed in 32 events, with each race on the ergometers in the McKinnon Gym displayed on large projection screens for the rowers and others in attendance to follow.
38 SMUS athletes took part, with every single one achieving their personal goals.

Junior A Men: Triton Lelewski – 8th out of 41 entrants
Junior A Lwt Girls: Acacia Welsford – 1st; Dayna Fitzgerald – 2nd
Junior A Lwt Men: Brody Clement-Thorne – 5th out of 30 entrants; Colin Knightley – 9th out of 30 entrants
Junior B Women: Sarah Hagkull – 8th out of 51 entrants; Kate Laumann-Wallace – 11th out of 51 entrants; Natalie Blecha – 14th out of 51 entrants; Pia Marie Vittinghoff – 19th out of 51 entrants
Junior B Men: Ryan Totz – 5th out of 48 entrants
Junior Novice Mens Double: Quinn Ngawati and Aubry Williams – 1st; Luke Erasmus and Nathan Anter – 2nd; Roan Rain and Rosendo Gutierrez – 3rd
Junior Novice Women Double: Maddy Standen and Erin Forbes – 1st; Chloe White and Patricia Ye – 2nd
While recent sub zero temperatures forced an additional period of indoor training, the SMUS rowers will return to the water this week in preparation for the March 1-2 regatta at Elk Lake. All signs point to a very successful season.
