Grade 7 Girls Become City Champions

Our Grade 7 girls basketball team had a strong season, culminating in a city championship win over the holiday break. Above, centre Marika shares her thoughts on the big win and why she enjoys her time on the court. Below, coach Don Pollock reports on the season.

Our 16 Grade 7 girls began their season in mid-October with enthusiasm and looking forward to an exciting season of basketball. For the next two months, a steady regimen of basketball three times a week saw the girls’ individual and team skills greatly improve and this, coupled with Night League practices and games managed by Mr. Donny Leong, earned the girls some outstanding results. As a result the SMUS girls were undefeated heading into the championship game against rival Pacific Christian School.

PCS arrived with a team short on numbers but strong on talent and the game was close for the first quarter. Then the SMUS players made a decision that the game was to be theirs and led by the post play of Marika, Georgia, and Meredith (in addition to the backcourt of Isabella, Abbey, Zoe L., Tate R. and Zoe W-P) our girls began to pull away and SMUS emerged victorious, Victoria champions for the 2013-2014 season, by a final score of 26-21.

Throughout the season Cindy L., Radha R., Anna C., Ella, Olivia L., Olly, Liza W., and Trinity D., were all key, contributing members of the team, in some games contributing key baskets on offence or making some important stops on defense in crucial situations.

It has been so much fun coaching these respectful, hard-working young ladies and I look forward to following their future basketball progress with great interest.
