Senior Boys Basketball: Let’s Get it Started

Fresh off the November 23 opener against the Alumni team, our Senior basketball boys kicked off their pre-season with a very busy week.

Up first was the annual Whites vs Blues contest, with the latter squad, led by Danny Wu and Matt Brien, breaking open a close contest with a fourth quarter flurry en route to a 66-49 win.

The following day, SMUS defeated Mt. Douglas 70-52 in an exhibition matchup. Wu continued his torrid shooting, finishing with 24 points, while senior Jordan Lane notched a career high 26.

The November 29-30 weekend saw five games in total, with both the developmental team and Senior boys in action.

The developmental team had two very competitive outings – with David Lee, Jeremy Chan, Callum Montgomery and Michael Cernucan all showing well – despite falling 65-60 to Mt. Douglas and then 63-61 at the buzzer to Belmont.

Seeded #2 in the most recent BC AA rankings, the SMUS Senior boys hosted the ISA Tournament and successfully defended their title after match-ups with St. John’s, Collingwood and Brentwood.

In the 97-46 quarterfinal win vs St. John’s, Graeme Hyde-Lay’s 20-point total made him one of six players in the double figures, while against Collingwood, Jake Wilmott sparked a third quarter burst which broke wide open a two point game.

In the final, while Brentwood jumped out to an 18-12 lead after seven minutes, SMUS rallied to take control thereafter. Jason Scully led all scorers with 21 in what finished a reasonably comfortable 66-51 victory.

A busy week now awaits both teams. The developmental team travels to Parkland on December 3 before playing in the PCS Invitational. The SMUS Senior boys will host provincial #8 Gulf Islands on December 4 and then provincial AAAA powerhouse Claremont the day after.
