by Mary Smith, strings teacher
On a bright, sunny day the musicians in this Middle School string orchestra presented pieces by George Frederic Handel and Jean Baptiste Lully along with music with a popular flavour from ragtime and jazz genres.
Parents, fellow students, administrative personnel, faculty members from across the campus and guests from the SMUS community were in attendance to hear the results of the work done since early September.
It had been a somewhat arduous journey for these 56 musicians to learn and perfect the repertoire chosen for presentation but the result was successful and there was a feeling of satisfaction, on the part of many, at the completion of the concert. There were musical moments to enjoy and cherish in the ensemble performance of these young string players on this occasion.
Four soloists from within the ensemble played pieces that they had prepared in their extra-curricular studies: Amy Zhang (an unaccompanied violin sonata), John Sun (a gavotte by J.S. Bach for viola), Tony Liu (a sonatina for solo piano) and Lillian Li (a portion of Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for violin).
Their additions to this early afternoon musical serenade made for fine listening!

An art display was mounted at the entrance to the gym to enable some recently completed pieces by students at the Middle School to receive the appreciation of a wide audience.
Congratulations are extended to one and all!
