Senior Girls Volleyball: Peaking at the Right Time

The Senior girls volleyball team appears to be rounding into form at just the right time, following an exciting 3-2 win over Claremont on November 5 in the quarterfinals of the Vic Lindal Cup. The squad, behind the fine defensive play of Jessica Jiang and libero Paris Lowe, bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to move on to the tournament final four.

While the semifinal against powerful Belmont resulted in 3-0 defeat, Jiang continued her excellent form, while Beta Willeboordse and Amy Bodine combined for some strong offensive play.

In the bronze medal game, the Blue Jags once again showed pleasing teamwork, but fell to Oak Bay 3-2 to finish in fourth place. Down two sets to zero, SMUS scrambled back (25-21 and 25-23) to draw level, but then lost the deciding game 15-13. Seniors Sam Colby and Mikayla Neal provided excellent defensive play, while Jiang and Lowe were once again prominent.

SMUS now moves on to the AAA Island Tournament, to be held November 15-16 at Timberline in Campbell River. Pool games against Esquimalt, Carihi and Ballenas will determine playoff positioning and the top three finishers qualify for provincials. The fourth place school will take part in a wild card challenge.
