The rowing team competed October 19-20 in the second of three fall competitions, where – due to the horrendous weather which cut short the September regatta – many seniors gained their first racing experience. Even this was not without its perils, as a thick fog blanketed Elk Lake for much of the first day.
By the end of the weekend, in a new revamped scoring system, SMUS finished 2nd in efficiency for Senior Girls and Senior Boys, and 3rd in efficiency for Junior Girls and Junior Boys. In the overall category, SMUS placed 2nd out of 14 schools entered.
Particular congratulations to Maximillian Widjaja, Bell Wu, Zachary Kahn, Benedikt Wilke, Richard Chan, Roland Liao-Briere, Anton Yau, James Hayashi and cox Katelyn McAulay, who combined to capture gold in the Senior Novice Men’s 8.
McAulay then returned to guide the Junior Novice Men’s 8 to the same finish, with Nathan Anter, Ivan Trinajstic, Joshua Kahn, Zachary Zwicky, Jordan Hibbert, Ryan Totz and Aubry Williams in fine form.
Other crews to reach the podium included the Junior Novice Women’s 8, Junior Women’s 2X, Advanced Women’s 4X, Senior Men’s 4X, Junior Novice Men’s and Women’s 8s, and Junior Novice Boy’s 4X.
Next up for the team is the Victoria City Championships on November 2-3. Once again, the event will be held at Elk Lake.
