Competing at Beacon Hill Park in ideal fall conditions, the fourth race of the season saw 17 SMUS runners take on a course modified somewhat due to environmental concerns. As such, running mostly through a maze of tall grass over 3km, Chrissy Robillard, Laura Woods, Acacia Welsford and Sarah Taylor combined nicely for a silver medal team finish. On the boys side, while numbers were thin due to illness and injury, Andrew Williams performed extremely well to claim 9th place overall.
On October 15, the team participated in the Island Age Group Championships at Beaver Lake. As the event is seen as warm-up to the full Island meet, many of the top mid/north Island schools took part.
For SMUS, in the Junior Boys 4k race, Lucas Simpson finished 4th followed by Michael Wong-Harrison (7th) and Ben Parker (11th). This group has done well enough to qualify for the Junior provincials, which will take place in Vancouver on November 2nd.
In the Junior girls race, Natalie Blecha was the top SMUS performer, running steadily to claim 20th place.
In the Senior ranks, Andrew Williams performed very well to finish in 17th place. However, it was once again the girls team that impressed, ending up in 4th place overall, thanks to solid performances by Chrissy Robillard (10th), Laura Woods (12th), Acacia Welsford (15th) and Sarah Taylor (20th).
The Island Championships take place Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, again at Beaver Lake. SMUS is primed and ready to make it a day to remember. The top 20 individual finishers and top four teams in both the girls and boys races qualify for the provincials.
