Grade 8 rugby has been under way for the last couple of weeks. After a handful of practices, a team of 20 players, including five new both to the school and the sport, travelled to Shawnigan Lake School September 19 for its first game. Some of the play, in terms of accurate passing and support, was very pleasing.
A week later, SMUS entertained St. George’s School. A very promising start unfortunately did not garner any points. Eventually, the sheer size of the opposition began to take its toll, with the hosts dropping off a few tackles and leaving gaps through which some tries were scored. Not to be outdone, the team battled back, never giving in and scored a fine try of its own.
Despite the scoreline, the SMUS attack and ability to put phases together were again to the fore. The defensive play and organization will improve. Players who stood out included flyhalf Ethan Hersant, centre Matthew Hagkull, scrumhalf Harry Shaw, wing/fullback Alex Calderon and lock/centre Tony Liu.
