Summer Volunteering at the Public Library! They have opportunities for Tech Buddies, Knit Wits, Teen Council and Reading Buddies.

Reading Buddies

If you like working with children, enjoy reading, are a fluent English speaker, and want to help emerging readers, we need you! Reading Buddies volunteers mentor children in Grades 1-4 with reading practice, literacy-based activities and fun. We provide training and, upon completion, a reference letter outlining your volunteer hours. If you are a new Big Buddy, please complete a Teen Volunteer Referral Form and bring it to the training session. For ages 13-18.

Teen Council

Have your voice heard! Teens looking for an interesting volunteer opportunity are invited to join the GVPL Teen Council. Work on special library projects, meet other teens, have fun, boost your resume, and earn volunteer hours. For ages 13–18. Teen Council meets once  month at the Saanich Centennial Branch, from September – June, and participants also work on special projects and represent the library at community events.  This year’s Teen Council is now underway.

Tech Buddies

Tech Buddies connects teenagers with adults who want to know more about new technologies.  Use your savvy and skills on computers, tablets, smartphones, eBook readers, and other gadgets.  You will get to meet new people, practice your teaching skills, and earn volunteer hours. If you are new to Tech Buddies, please complete a Teen Volunteer Referral Form and bring it to the training session.  For ages 13-18.

Tech Buddies is currently underway at the Nellie McClung Branch. Summer Tech Buddies will take place at the Esquimalt Branch from August 12-16. Registration begins June 15. Visit www.gvpl.ca , or contact your local branch to register.

Knit Wits

A fun way to gain volunteer hours and give back to the community — and learn to knit too! Teens and tweens can earn hours toward the High School volunteer or community service graduation requirement by participating in our Knit Wits program and donating a completed neckwarmer. A letter documenting their hours will be available upon request – we award five hours for this project, including the program time. Interested in knitting as a volunteer opportunity?
