In early February, Rea Casey and I spent a week in Southern California visiting colleges with three other University Counsellors from BC independent schools. With Juanita the GPS as our co-pilot, our road trip/professional development included two days in LA, a day in Claremont, and two days in San Diego. (Yes, I do have the best job going.) We managed to get our feet on 11 campuses and meet with admissions representatives and students at each college. In addition, we had the chance to sit down with a SMUS 2012 grad in each city and get their take on SoCal life, and on their “freshman” college experience.
Fortified by my fill of avocado, Mexican food, and fresh, local fruit, the week provided me with a clear understanding of why California calls to many of our students. Firstly, sunshine abounds, although the deluge in the streets after the rain in San Diego was quite something! The campuses we visited are universally lush, and the learning and living environments are ripe with opportunities for talented young people. Click on the links below for photos and insights.
