Each year, SMUS is able to award one Governor General Award Bronze Medal to the graduating student with the highest academic average of the final marks of all Grade 11 and 12 courses. After crunching the numbers, the winner for the Grad class of 2012 was Victor Shang.
Victor finished his high school career with a stunning 97.06% average on all his grade 11 and 12 coursework. He took part in 11 AP courses, earned 100% on his Principles of Math 12 Provincial Exam (taken when he was in gr 10), 100% in AP Calculus AB and a mere 99% in AP Calculus BC. And he graduated with 162 credits, more than double the number required for graduation.
Ms. Casey and I were in Claremont, California in early February and had the great pleasure of awarding Victor his medal with the help of the University President, Dr. Maria Klawe at Harvey Mudd College, where Victor is in first year studying physics.
