Early Investigation Helps Course Selection Success

With the deadline for course selection at the Senior School less than a month away, now is the time for students – and parents – to look at their options for the 2013-2014 school year. To help them prepare, we held our annual Course Planning Information Evening this week, inviting parents and students (Grades 8-11) to get general information about the course planning and selection process.

Each student’s profile for making selections is unique: learning preferences, strengths, interests, graduation requirements, extra-curricular activities, and post-secondary plans all need to be taken into account.

There are several resources for both students and parents to consult in the course planning process:

Most importantly, our students’ Academic Advisors (Alison McCallum, Greg Marchand, Rea Casey, Jake Humphries, Richard Primrose) are available as direct support for our students as they work through their choices for next year and students can make appointments with these individuals by emailing them to schedule a planning session or two with them.

There is a great amount of support here at SMUS for both students and parents while considering course options throughout the senior years as it is important to ensure that students meet graduation and post-secondary planning requirements. Students and parents might find they have questions about which English course to take, how many Science courses to take, or what the difference might be between math courses.

All questions do have an answer! More specific questions might include:

  • What courses are required for graduation?
  • What courses do I need to have in Grades 11 and 12 to get into the university program that I am interested in?
  • How many electives can I take in my schedule?

With all these resources, in addition to our faculty and Heads of Department, you will learn about the planning process and important details to keep in mind when making important course selection decisions.

Please note that our Course Selection opens in SDS (Student Data System) on Monday, February 25, 2013 and the deadline for entering course choices is Tuesday, March 12 by the end of the day. Parents will be able to view their child’s course selection throughout the planning process via the Parent Portal. Further, we are expecting to have student schedules for 2013-2014 available by the end of June and students will be able to make any changes to their course selection, if necessary, at the end of August. Happy course planning!
