How can it be September already? Hopefully you had a fantastic summer break. Throughout the year the students at SMUS are involved in all kinds of off-campus service including volunteering at Senior’s homes and hospitals, with kids at schools and community centres, with the Special Olympics, at food banks, and with environmental restoration projects. As the term starts there are a few things to keep in mind regarding Service at SMUS.
- Our goal at SMUS is for every student from grade 9 – 12 to engage in 10 hours of off-campus service every year. Some of you may do service projects with your boarding house, homeroom, sports team, or with your family and all of these can count towards your total.
- If you would like to find out more about the wide variety of service opportunities in the community, you can see a list of them here. It will be frequently updated with new opportunities. You can also stop by the Leadership office and speak with Mrs. Parker and she will help you find an opportunity that appeals to you. As well, just outside the Social Studies department there is a bulletin board with postings about opportunities.
- Becoming a member of the Service Council is a great way to get involved, both on-campus and off. Councils will start to meet in the next few weeks.
- If you have an idea about an off-campus service project you would like to pursue on your own or with your homeroom, boarding house, or a group of friends, please come and talk to Mrs. Parker about it. Her office (part of the Leadership Office) is located beside the Staff Room.
Looking forward to a great year.
