On Friday, July 29, a small group of student vocalists will present Pandora’s Locker, a one-act opera from Canadian composer Dean Burry.
Inspired by the Greek myth of Pandora’s Box, this contemporary youth opera captures the humour, excitement and drama found in the life of one high school girl. The production incorporates urban music and electronics and features a very talented and energetic cast. Among the performers are two UBC graduates, who head the ensemble of high school players, and local club dj Degree One.
Directed by Joanne Hounsell and choreographed by Phoebe Rumsey, Pandora’s Locker promises to be both professional and profound. SMUS Head of Music Donna Williams has been working with the supporting string quintet and the show also features Michael Drislane on the piano. The ambitious program has already been featured in the Victoria News and the Times Colonist.
“These students are so impressive,” says Dawn Wilson, who manages the summer programs each year. “It’s the first time we’ve done an opera course and the result is spectacular – come and see the show!”
