Students Spend Summer Playing Rugby

Rugby continues for a number of SMUS rugby players this summer as they represent a variety of local regional and provincial sides. This weekend sees many involved as part of the inaugural Victoria 7’s tournament.

Grade 9 students Owen Sudul, Graeme Hyde-Lay, Max Pollen, Mitch Newman, Carson Smith and Mac Valentine and Grade 8 student Jonas Robinson are all involved playing in Lower Island Under 14 teams in the BC Under 14 tournament against other BC regional teams at UVic Wallace Field on Friday, July 15th and on Saturday, July 16th. Owen, Graeme, Max, Mitch and Mac, along with Grade 9 student Simon Gray, will also be playing in one of two BC Under 14 13-aside teams that play against Alberta and Ontario on August 3rd-5th in Vancouver.

Also on Saturday, July 16th, Grade 12 students Jeff Nishima-Miller, Derek Hyde-Lay and Joe Erlic are playing in one of two BC Under 18 7-aside teams against Ontario, a prairie team and two teams from the USA. These tournaments are part of the inaugural Victoria 7’s being held for Senior Men all day Saturday at UVic with two Canada national development teams including three SMUS alumni: Andrew Crow, Beau Parker and Mike Fuailefau. The boys will be playing teams from Fiji, Mexico and Cayman Islands, as well as invitational sides. To top it off, SMUS alumni Marc van der Wal and Luke McCloskey will be playing with the Island Under 20 15-aside team as they host the Fraser Valley rep side at 2:00 pm at Parkland School.

Saturday, July 16th
BC Under 14 tournament: UVic Wallace Field (10:40-2pm)
BC Under 18 7-aside: SMUS (9:30 am-2:00 pm); UVic (4-5:30 pm)
Senior Men: UVic (9:30-6:20pm)
Island Under 20: Parkland School (2:00 pm)
