Grade 6 students hosted some special visitors from the Junior School this week when Grade 5 classes came to the Middle School to build models of atoms. For an extra bit of fun, the students constructed their model atoms out of edible ingredients, using jujubes as electrons and an orange to represent the nucleus. With the jujubes representing electrons – which are negatively charged – students had to choose a number of jujubes to stick into the orange to make their atom negative, positive or neutral. The teams of Grade 5 and 6 students made different models, they answered questions about atoms and did a word search of the new terms they learned just for fun. To wrap up a great morning, they got to eat their atom components!
