Last week was the official start of the high school golf season for SMUS. Even though the weather hasn’t been to conducive for golf, the team had two sunny and somewhat warm afternoons/evenings last week to play. Tryouts consisted of two rounds with 12 students vying for six spots on the team. Round one was at a fairly new and challenging course in town, Highland Pacific, and round two was at Uplands. After a steady first round of 77 at Highland Pacific, Johnathon Sipos held a two-stroke lead over his nearest competitor Nathan Haussmann and a three-stroke lead over Chris McEachran-Law. On day two, Chris shot a solid 78 at Uplands which was enough to catch up to and ultimately tie Johnathon for top spot at qualifying. Congratulations to this year’s team members: Chris McEachran-Law, Johnathon Sipos, Nathan Haussmann, David Lunn, Cole Turner and Alex Davies.
The Senior badminton team had their first league match of the season last week, squaring off against arch-rival Claremont. With having no practices over spring break, the team really was thrown into the fire for this game. In early play, it was evident that SMUS had their work cut out for them, as both the girls and boys doubles games split. With Ethan Lee winning the boys singles and young Nghi Nguyen losing narrowly in her singles match, it came down to the wire in this hotly contested affair. In the end, round two of the boys’ doubles games did not go our way, and it was a 6-5 loss for SMUS.
