On Halloween night the entire boarding community, some 250 students and over 30 house parents, gathered together in the school chapel for Howlapalooza 2010. This is an annual event where many hidden talents possessed by members of our boarding community are discovered, and other well known talents are revisited. In past years, the event has been held in numerous locations, from its beginnings in Brown Hall, to the strings room of Schaffter Hall, and the Copeland Lecture Theatre. This year, for the first time, the chapel was used as a venue in order to house our biggest crowd ever.
This year showcased a diverse array of acts, from the sublime piano playing of Lisa Chen to a performance of “Folsom Prison Blues” by houseparent Chris Bateman that would make Johnny Cash proud. Thompson Wong got a standing “O” for his rendition of “Moondance”, and houseparent Mat Geddes did a couple of brilliant covers (U2’s “Love Rescue Me” and Bruno Mars “Just the Way You Are.”). Victor Yoo entertained us with some wicked piano ragtime, and there were wonderful performances of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” by Tina Yu and Chloe Carlson, and Adele’s “Melt My Heart to Stone” by Sophie Neiwerth and Chloe Carlson.
The event started with an electric fusion meltdown with myself on electric violin, my son Brin Porter on electric stand-up bass and houseparent Darin Steinkey on drums. The concert ended with the Timmis Band (Jacky McKay, Carlina Kim, Priya Mulgaonkar, Mandy Tam, Victoria Galvan) performing “Back to December” by Taylor Swift and a harmonious version of Tegan and Sara’s “Walking with a Ghost.”
If you missed the show, stay tuned for our next boarding talent night sometime in the spring!
