Last week was Chinese culture week, the latest in a series of weeks put on by the International Council. One of the undisputed highlights was the return of the professional performers from Vancouver, who demonstrated martial arts and music in the middle of campus, in front a huge crowd. The lion dance is always a stunning performance and new features in the martial arts segment included some very impressive displays of skill with weapons from nunchuks to swords. Brown Hall served up a sampling of traditional Chinese cuisine, which was a huge hit with the boarders. There were also displays on China in the library and a lunchtime session teaching students to play mah-jong, a Chinese game of skill and strategy. Chinese culture was also injected into chapel, with student speeches and Tom Zheng’s mother, a professional opera singer, performing for students.
