by Laura Williams, Grade 5
The Grade 5 students used tin cans, nails, and hammers to make lanterns. This activity took place in language arts for the slavery unit. Abolitionists in the 1800s would put these lanterns in their houses. The slaves would know the houses were safe because the would have lanterns or they would put a blanket in the window, but we couldn’t really make a blanket each. For the programme, we put water in the tin can, then froze them for a few days. We took them out and taped a design on them. We hammered in appropriate spots and made holes. We put a tea light in and walked around a dark room. I thought the best part was when we showed the kindergarten class, as they were in awe.
