Celebrations in Grade 6 Humanities

Grade 6 students have been studying various cultures throughout the year as part of their Humanities course. As the holiday season approaches, we have been exploring the varieties of festivals and celebrations that different cultures hold this time of year. On December 3rd, we invited a parent, Dr. Shienbaum, Josh’s mom, to join our class and teach us about Jewish culture and in particular, the festival of Chanukah. She kindly made us latkes with apple sauce, taught us the significance of the menorah, the history of Chanukah, and brought each student their own dreidel. Josh then taught us a little Hebrew and explained the rules of the dreidel game. We finished off the class by playing the dreidel game for chocolate coins and M&Ms. It was a lot of fun and deeply enriched our understanding of world cultures and celebrations.
