Coins For Kids and the Festival of Trees Service Project

Submitted by Mrs. Smith

The British Columbia Children’s Hospital annually launches a fundraising campaign through a Festival of Trees, held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. This year the Middle School students took part in this service opportunity in several ways:

In late October they ran a Coins For Kids campaign over the course of 3 days. The total sum raised was $1,272.57 for the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

In mid November students in Mrs. Lee’s exploratory group created stars that would be used for decorating the Middle School tree at the hotel.

On the afternoon of November 19 an ensemble of Grade 7 string students (16 in all) performed at the official launch of the campaign, at the Fairmont Empress, surrounded by other participants in the festival who were occupied in tree decorating activities. The string ensemble, with Mrs. Smith, played festive music in a corner of the upper lobby – at the top of the elegant spiral staircase – to the delight of many.

Under Mr. Williams’ capable guidance they decorated their tree at the conclusion of the event with the gold glittered stars and ribbon that their peers had provided.

It was a grand celebration, at a grand hotel for a grand cause!
