Last week, students from Grades 6-8 showed what they could do at the Middle School Talent Show. Fresh from their Keep the Beat activities, the students sang, danced, played instruments and entertained a gymnasium full of their peers with their abilities and showmanship.

Pop music was a definite theme for this year, as many students performed some of their favourite songs. Adrian Sanchez Roji, David Pollen, Dawit Workie and Colton Stockus chose the melodramatic “Because of You” by American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. For duets, Ashley Hoydal-Payne and Maddy Laslett teamed up for “Love Story” by Taylor Swift and Catriona Gordon-Poag and Ellen Law split the vocal duties on “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles. Musically, Middle School band “Electric Winter,” featuring Keenan Manhas, Lindon Carter and Mark Yorath, brought some rock into the mix.

Carmen Lizola Crespo, Maddy Laslett as well as sisters Chanel and Fendi Shih gave a contemporary dance performance set to “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas. Also on the dancing side, Mila Stolle, Michelle Song, and Jennifer Shan performed a memorable interpretive dance version of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Ellie Patmore also brought her athletic abilities out to perform a gymnastics routine that included several back flips. Also on the athletic side, Steven Whillans and Mason Loewen showed video clips of themselves dunking basketballs.

On the piano, both Vivian Lam and Sofia Liang performed pieces from Chopin, while Shana Fong backed up Rachelle Sibbald and Pamela Shaefer as they sang “Poetry” by Danity Kane. On violin, Isabel Williams played a challenging classical number and Leonard Liao-Briere ended the show with a lively tune. Of course, the teachers also wanted to show off their talents, and did so with a graceful performance of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies,” complete with pink tutus, to the delight of their students.
