Senior Girls Volleyball Team
Island Championships began for the Senior girls volleyball team on Friday afternoon with round-robin play against St. Andrews, Shawnigan Lake and finally Brentwood College. Although the girls easily beat St. Andrews in two, they struggled against Shawnigan Lake, losing in three sets. It was much of the same against Brentwood College. After placing third in their pool, the girls played a cross-over match against Ladysmith. They knew that if they lost this game, their season would be over.

The team came out firing and ready to play. Led by Shelby Boehm, the girls outplayed Ladysmith with their tough serving and aggressive attacking, winning in two games. The semi-final was a challenge, as the girls had to face Brentwood College again. Kristen Porrelli’s attacking was nearly unstoppable, Heather Roseblade and Kelsey Harbord’s blocking helped shut down Brentwood’s attacks and all of the girls dug deep and worked hard.

Unfortunately, Brentwood applied heavy pressure with their serving and SMUS struggled with the three matches, losing their berth to provincials. However, spirits remained high as they played PCS for the bronze. With Marlise Nussbaumer’s decisive and accurate setting the ladies forced errors upon PCS and they won the best of five in three steady sets

The team was awarded the bronze medal and have extended their season to compete for the wildcard berth for provincials in the lower mainland this week. Shelby Boehm was named a First Team All-Star and the entire team should be proud of their performance.

Rowing
The weather blessed us on Saturday – no rain, no wind and beautiful racing water. Unfortunately, on Sunday the sun shined everywhere else in the city but Elk Lake was lost in fog. The second day of the championships has been rescheduled for next Saturday (November 22).

At of the end of this weekend’s racing, SMUS had these results:

  • Entered 11 of 13 possible events and made all 11 finals
  • First place finishes (City Champions) = 5
  • Second = 4
  • Third = 1 (two boats in the same event; the other placed 1st)
  • Fourth = 1
  • Sixth = 1

We are hoping that we will race Saturday and if so we will be chasing 10 more city titles!

Senior Boys Soccer
