SMUS Gets Ready for Spring

Spring Fair is returning to the school this year, after a long absence. The huge community celebration, which also acts as an important fundraiser, will take place a week after Alumni Weekend and promises to be as much fun as it has been in the past.

“It’s just a great family day,” says Spring Fair Co-chair Mary Pollen. “It’s an opportunity to get all three campuses together.”

Among the many attractions of the event are kids’ fun and games, international foods, a massive flea market and musical entertainment from community members. Shopping is a huge part of the day, as everything from clothing to furniture to sports equipment (donated by the SMUS community) is up for grabs.

“It’s a fantastic way to clean out your closet,” says Mrs. Pollen.

Both new and used goods are welcome, from well-worn housewares to any unwanted gifts that are lingering in your closet. Donating goods is one way for people to contribute, but a lot more help is needed. Because of the size of the event, it takes a lot of volunteers in capacities that include organizing the food fair, renting games for the kids and planning parking.

“It’s a ton of fun to work on this,” says Mrs. Pollen. “Gather a group of friends and share a job.”

Though the fair is still over seven months away, the organizers are already collecting silent auction items and next month will be the first opportunity to drop off goods for the sale. Past fairs have paid for a new bus, a PA system for the Junior School, the Middle School basketball courts and other items that are usually funded through the school’s budget alone.
