The 2008-2009 school year kicked off last Wednesday with Term 1 sport tryouts. Student participation rates look good in many sports, in particular, Grade 10 rugby, Senior girls volleyball and rowing.
The Senior boys soccer team will be competing at the AA level once again this year, after a two year stint at the AAA level. This change in tier should see our team make a strong push for a provincial bid. Soccer action gets underway quickly, as we host the ISA Tournament on September 19th and 20th.
Once again, rowing numbers were up as coaches managed aver 70 students at tryouts. Coming off of a very successful first season as the Head Coach of the SMUS crew, Mrs. Walker-Curry is optimistic about another banner year.
On the rugby front, the Grade 9 and 10 boys have been working hard under the tutelage of coaches, Anderson and Hyde-Lay. Their first test will be in two weeks time, as ISA matches get underway. The coaching staff has been bolstered this year by the addition of SMUS Coaching Intern, Nanyak Dala (current National Team flanker) and Bryant Hollingworth (international experience), as well as current U20 team members, Struan Robertson and Ian Manly. We are extremely excited to have these talented young coaches on staff.
Volleyball has had a strong showing at tryouts this past week. The Junior girls will be running two competitive teams with the hope of hosting the first SMUS Junior Girls Invitational Tournament in October. The Senior girls have high expectations this year, having lost only four players to graduation, this talented group of seniors boasts provincial calibre star, Shelby Boehm.
The field hockey team also got underway last week. All practices and games are up at UVic’s Turf Fields. With the graduation of goalie, Tori Sapsford, the SMUS team is looking to fill that spot. Field hockey action gets underway this weekend with a tournament up at Brentwood College.
Term 1 tryouts will all wrap up this week with roster announcements to follow.
