The SMUS Parents’ Auxiliary has a new president. Cathy Dixon will be continuing the work that former president Marie Wizinsky started and creating even more ways for parents to interact with the school community and students.
“My focus is to try to cast the net a little wider, to get more parents involved, with a focus on fun,” says Ms. Dixon.
The Parents’ Auxiliary already runs events such as the Christmas Dinner and Dance as well as services like birthday cake service for boarding students, staff appreciation lunches and used uniform sales, but Ms. Dixon wants to do even more. “Every parent of a SMUS student is a member of the Parent’s Auxiliary,” she says, “and my goal is to get more parents involved, whether through volunteer activities, social events or sharing expertise.”
Ms. Dixon and her fellow PA members have several ideas for increasing opportunities for parents to participate in school life. One new event might be a renewal of an English tradition, called a quiz night. Parents and students would be put into teams and answer questions to win points. Another of their ideas is to start a panel of parents whose children have gone through the university application process, so that parents of younger students can access an experienced source of support and knowledge.
“I truly believe in the school,” says Ms. Dixon. “The effort, passion and commitment that is going into the education of our son is phenomenal. I want to support this school and contribute something of value.”
