After six hours of rehearsing last Thursday afternoon, it is safe to state that the Middle School put together a stellar performance Thursday evening. The Middle School Spring Concert was filled with a wide range of musical genres preformed by the choir, string ensembles and concert and honour bands.
The Grade 6 and 7 strings played a moving piece by Vivaldi, with young soloist Brian Yam on the cello, who played exceptionally as lead. Mrs. Mary F. Smith was pleased to be able to put together a group of six bass players this year. The group preformed a spirited bluegrass piece called “Bass-ically Bluegrass.”
Another highlight was the Grade 8 String Ensemble playing a fantasia theme, featuring Christina Chwyl on the harp. And Mr. Duncan Frater was especially proud of his Grade 6 choir, who are already performing in three-part harmonies, which is advanced for a choir at their level. An epic and familiar piece,“Pirates of the Caribbean,” was performed, which was fun for the audience and the students, and added excitement to the concert.
The concert ended on a funky note when Ms. Pamela Gerrit’s honour band preformed “Funkytown.” With a line-up that included several different ensembles and stage transitions, the flow of the concert was exceptionally smooth and the overall presentation was an excellent showcase of these young musicians’ talents.
