During the recent Mid-term break, Ms. Judy Tobacco accompanied five Grade 12 students on a surf trip to Tofino, located on Vancouver Island’s west coast. Tofino is one the most popular destinations on the Island, and is known for its long beautiful beaches, towering rainforests and being one the few places in Canada allowing year-round surfing.
The students spent the long weekend at a beautiful cabin on Chesterman beach, where the group surfed for two days. “The water was rather cold, and waves were pretty strong, but that is the best part about winter surfing,” says Emily Lewis. In the winter months, Pacific storms create ideal surfing conditions for the more adventurous surfers.
Each of the students had previous surfing experience prior to the trip and are considered intermediate-level surfers. “The weather was generally cold, wet and windy, but the students surfed really well considering the stormy conditions and big surf,” says Ms. Tobacco.
